Dr. Mezuk was an invited speaker at a two-day workshop at McGill University in Montreal, Canada on “Depression and Pre-diabetes: A call to action.” The conference was hosted by Dr. Norbert Schmitz and involved speakers from around the world, including (pictured left to right) Dr. Larry Cimino, Director of the Dialogue on Diabetes and Depression, Dr. Mika Kivimaki, Professor at University College London and Director of the Whitehall Study; Dr. Michael Kyrios, Professor at the Australian National University; Dr. Laura Rosella from University of Toronto School of Public Health; Dr. Paul Ciechanowski, Professor at University of Washington; Dr. Frans Pouwer, Professor at University of Tilberg in the Netherlands; and Dr. Lorian Taylor from Alberta Health Services. Dr. Steven Cohen has received an Erickson Foundation Research Award in Positive Aging from the Aging and Public Health Section of the American Public Health Association.

The Erickson award is given in recognition of contributions to the understanding of positive aging, as exemplified by Dr. Cohen’s paper Geographic variation in rural-urban obesity rates in older adults: Evidence from a national survey (co-authored with Lauren Kelley, MPH, CHES, Sarah Cook, MPH, Julia Foutz, MPH, and Trisha Sando, DPT, CWS).

Dr. Cohen has received four teaching awards this year from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine:

Congratulations to GREMAP member Julia Foutz, MPH on her new position as a Research Analyst with the DC office of the Kaiser Family Foundation!

The Kaiser Family Foundation is a non-profit organization that focuses on national health issues, as well as the U.S. role in global health policy. The foundation serves as a non-partisan source of facts, analysis and journalism for policymakers, the media, the health policy community and the public. As a research analyst Julia will contribute to the foundation mission to develop and conduct policy analysis, journalism and communications programs.

Endocrine Today has written an article about Dr. Jeannie Concha’s paper Culture-centered approaches: the relevance of assessing emotional health for Latinos with type 2 diabetes. This paper examines whether medical doctors are asking Latinos with diabetes about emotional problems, an important comorbidity in diabetes care.
