Dr. Steven Cohen receives Erickson Foundation Research Award in Positive Aging

Dr. Steven Cohen has received an Erickson Foundation Research Award in Positive Aging from the Aging and Public Health Section of the American Public Health Association.

The Erickson award is given in recognition of contributions to the understanding of positive aging, as exemplified by Dr. Cohen’s paper Geographic variation in rural-urban obesity rates in older adults: Evidence from a national survey (co-authored with Lauren Kelley, MPH, CHES, Sarah Cook, MPH, Julia Foutz, MPH, and Trisha Sando, DPT, CWS).

Dr. Steven Cohen wins four teaching awards

Dr. Cohen has received four teaching awards this year from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine:

Julia Foutz takes new position at Kaiser Family Foundation

Congratulations to GREMAP member Julia Foutz, MPH on her new position as a Research Analyst with the DC office of the Kaiser Family Foundation!

The Kaiser Family Foundation is a non-profit organization that focuses on national health issues, as well as the U.S. role in global health policy. The foundation serves as a non-partisan source of facts, analysis and journalism for policymakers, the media, the health policy community and the public. As a research analyst Julia will contribute to the foundation mission to develop and conduct policy analysis, journalism and communications programs.

Trisha Sando to present two posters at American Physical Therapy Association Conference

Doctoral student Trisha Sando will be presenting her research “Patient Reports of Post-CVA Functional Impairments are the Driving Force Behind Post-Acute Therapy Referrals” (created in collaboration with Dr. Steve Cohen and Scott Ratliff) and “Psychiatric Medication Use is Associated with Increased Impairments in the Vestibular and Proprioception Systems” (created in collaboration with Natalie Bareis and Scott Ratliff) at the Combined Sections Meeting of the American Physical Therapy Association, February 2016 in Anaheim, California. Dr. Mezuk to give keynote address on prediabetes and mental health

Dr. Briana Mezuk will be a keynote speaker at McGill University’s Conference on Prediabetes and Mental Health.

This conference, which will be held November 12-13 in Montreal, Quebec, will bring together researchers, policy-makers, and other stake-holders to share knowledge on the role mental health may play in the transition from prediabetes to type II diabetes, and to identify future research priorities in this area.
