Congratulations to Matthew Lohman, MHS, PhD on his graduation from the VCU PhD in Epidemiology Program! Dr. Lohman has accepted a postdoctoral fellowship with the Weill Cornell Medical College, Institute of Geriatric Psychiatry.

Julia Foutz, Lauren Kelley, and Kristen Rice graduated with their Masters of Public Health from VCU’s Department of Family Medicine and Population Health, Division of Epidemiology. Julia and Lauren have accepted positions within the Division of Epidemiology. Kristen has accepted a position as Research Consultant with The Lewin Group’s Center on Aging and Disability. Elderly suicide prevention: Focus on housing transition

ORLANDO- Transition to an assisted-living facility or nursing home is a period of high risk for suicide among the elderly- as well as an opportunity for preventive intervention. That was the key message of a study, which earned its presenter, Briana Mezuk, Ph.D., the Best Early Investigator Award for the top research study presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry.

Dr. Jeannie Cocha has been selected to attend the American Psychological Association’s Advanced Training Institute on Research Methods with Diverse Racial and Ethnic Groups. The Advanced Training Institute will take place from June 1st through June 6th in at Michigan State University in East Lansing. Dr. Mezuk, who won the 2014 Barry Lebowitz Early Career Scientist Award from the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry, with Dr. Lebowitz himself! Dr. Lebowitz and Dr. Mezuk were participating in the Advanced Research Institute in Geriatric Mental Health in Phoenix, Arizona in early April.

Dr. Mezuk was presented with the Barry Lebowitz Early Career Scientist Award during the opening plenary at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry. The award honors the best original research paper submitted by an early career scientist. Dr. Mezuk’s award-winning paper, “Comorbidity between major depression and type 2 diabetes in mid-life: Exploring causal effects using a twin design” was also featured in the Research Awards Paper Session.

Dr. Mezuk and Matthew Lohman won the “Best Early Investigator Poster” for their poster titled, “Suicide in long-term care and assisted-living facilities from 2003-2011.”
